Your own milk, freeze-dried. Services freeze-dry a mother's expressed milk and return it as powder for her own baby. Provenance is not in question; the only questions are what the process does to the milk and how the service handles hygiene.
A product made from other people's milk. This is what milk banks do at scale for hospitals, and what a small number of companies — including Vyarna — do for consumers. Here provenance is the whole question, and the FDA and AAP positions below apply.
Milk is collected, frozen, and freeze-dried: water is removed under vacuum by sublimation, leaving a powder that is stable at room temperature and reconstituted with water [2]. Some processes pasteurise the milk before drying; some do not. The drying itself is not a heat treatment and does not kill microorganisms.
A 2024 scoping review of 48 studies found that freeze-drying reduces fat-globule size and the quantity of some enzymes, vitamin C and immunoglobulin, and concluded that more safety and efficacy data are needed, particularly for preterm infants [2]. A 2022 study found protein and volatile-compound profiles after freeze-drying changed less than the natural variation between donors [3].
Milk banks pool milk from several donors so that each batch has a more average composition. Vyarna pools for a further reason. In a study published in Microbial Pathogenesis in 2026, authored by Vyarna's founder and collaborators, 16S rRNA sequencing of fresh, individually freeze-dried and pooled samples from 13 mothers found that the pooled powder had greater bacterial richness and evenness than any single source sample, with consistently higher abundance of commensals such as Streptococcus salivarius [4]. The authors state explicitly that they "do not claim viability or clinical outcomes" — the study measured which bacterial DNA was present, not whether the bacteria were alive or whether it makes any difference to a baby [4]. We think that is an interesting result and an open question, in that order.
The FDA "does not recommend feeding your baby breast milk acquired directly from individuals or through the Internet", and advises that if you feed a baby human milk from a source other than the baby's mother, you "only use milk from a source that has screened its milk donors and taken other precautions to ensure the safety of its milk" [5]. The AAP notes infectious and contamination risks with informal milk sharing and recommends pasteurised donor milk for very low birth weight infants when mother's milk is unavailable [1].
Any product — ours included — should be held to that standard: screened providers, tested milk, and a supplier who will tell you exactly what "screened" and "tested" mean in their case.
Vyarna sources from compensated, screened providers and tests the milk in the laboratory. There is no validated pathogen-inactivation step in our process; safety rests on screening and testing, not on a kill step. We do not claim that our powder replaces breastfeeding or formula, and we do not claim health outcomes for it. It is sold as a complement.
