Some studies have found associations between breastfeeding and differences in infant gut microbiome composition during early life. Some researchers suggest these early differences may be relevant to certain health outcomes, including aspects of immune development.

How to read microbiome research
Most microbiome studies in infants are observational — they find differences between groups rather than establishing direct causes and effects. An association between breastfeeding and microbiome composition does not mean breastfeeding is the only factor, or that the difference produces a specific health outcome in any individual baby.
Formula does not contain a microbiome. Studies have found differences in gut microbiome composition between breastfed and formula-fed infants during early life. The long-term significance of these early differences for individual babies is not fully established.
Formula-fed babies develop healthy digestive systems. Individual outcomes vary widely, and many factors beyond feeding method — including birth mode, antibiotic exposure, diet diversity, and environment — shape the developing gut microbiome.
