Early life is a critical window for brain development, when the brain grows faster than at any other time. Nutrition plays a direct role in how well this process unfolds. Breast milk contains several compounds specifically implicated in neurological development, which has made the breastfeeding-intelligence link one of the most studied questions in paediatric nutrition.
DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid)
An omega-3 fatty acid that is a major component of brain fat. Critical for neuronal membrane formation and visual cortex development. Breast milk DHA levels vary with maternal diet.

Studies reporting cognitive advantages for breastfed children are complicated by confounding factors. Mothers who breastfeed are, on average, more educated, have higher incomes, and spend more time engaging verbally with their babies — all of which independently drive cognitive outcomes.
The most methodologically rigorous study to date is the PROBIT trial — a Belarusian randomised controlled trial of a breastfeeding-promotion programme. Critically, this study randomised the intervention (promotion program), not breastfeeding itself, making it the closest we have to a true experiment.
A sibling study (comparing breastfed and formula-fed siblings within the same family) found no significant cognitive difference — suggesting family environment explains much of the observed effect.
The honest summary
Breast milk likely provides real neurological benefits, particularly for premature or vulnerable infants. For term babies, the magnitude of benefit from feeding method alone is smaller than headlines suggest, and is dwarfed by the influence of responsive caregiving, verbal interaction, and a stable environment.
Modern formula is among the most highly regulated food products available, required by law in most countries to contain DHA, ARA, and choline. While formulas do not replicate the full biological composition of breast milk, they are nutritionally complete.
The cognitive benefits of formula feeding ease — attentive, low-stress parenting — may outweigh the marginal biological differences in some situations. A parent who can't breastfeed and formula-feeds with confidence, reading, talking, and engaging with their baby, is giving their child exactly what brain development requires.
