Modern infant formula is a nutritionally complete food designed to support healthy infant growth and development. It provides all the macronutrients (protein, fat, carbohydrates), vitamins, and minerals a baby needs in the right proportions. Formula has been the basis of millions of healthy childhoods.
Breast milk contains certain components not fully replicated in formula, including maternal IgA antibodies, a community of beneficial bacteria, human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) in greater diversity than synthesised versions, hormones, growth factors, and other bioactive proteins. The clinical significance of these differences varies by individual circumstance and baby.
Formula is nutritionally adequate. Breast milk is nutritionally adequate plus biologically complex. The choice between them — or the combination of both — is a personal one that should be made based on what is realistic and sustainable for your family, not on guilt.
